Clear aligner treatment explained by Dr. Reeja Moideen

One of the most common questions I hear in my clinic is: "Doctor, can I straighten my teeth without anyone noticing?" Clear aligners have made this possible for millions of people around the world — and they are now one of the most popular orthodontic options here in the UAE. But they are not the right choice for everyone. In this article, I want to give you an honest, complete picture.

As a Specialist Orthodontist with a postgraduate qualification from Danube University, Austria, and an MOrth from the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, I have treated hundreds of patients with both clear aligners and traditional braces. Here is everything you need to know before making your decision.

What Are Clear Aligners?

Clear aligners are custom-made, removable trays made from smooth, transparent plastic. Each tray is worn over your teeth for about one to two weeks and gently moves them a fraction of a millimetre closer to their ideal position. You progress through a series of trays — each slightly different — until your treatment is complete.

The most well-known brand is Invisalign, which I am a certified provider of. There are also other reputable clear aligner systems available. All work on the same principle — precision-engineered, computer-planned tooth movement using a series of custom trays.

How are the trays made?

  • We take a precise 3D digital scan of your teeth using our intraoral scanner — no messy impressions
  • A digital treatment plan is created, showing your projected tooth movement step by step
  • You can see a simulation of your final smile before treatment even begins
  • Trays are manufactured and delivered — you receive several sets at a time and change them at home

Clear Aligners vs Traditional Braces

Both options move teeth effectively, but they differ in important ways. Here is a straightforward comparison to help you decide:

Clear Aligners
Visibility Nearly invisible
Removable Yes — for eating & cleaning
Comfort Smooth plastic, no sharp edges
Complex cases ~ Best for mild–moderate
Discipline Must wear 20–22 hrs/day
Oral hygiene Brush & floss normally
Diet No restrictions
Duration ~ 6–18 months typically
Traditional Braces
Visibility Visible metal/ceramic brackets
Removable Fixed — cannot be removed
Comfort ~ Wires can irritate cheeks
Complex cases Handles severe cases well
Discipline No compliance needed
Oral hygiene ~ Extra care around brackets
Diet Avoid hard, sticky foods
Duration ~ 12–24 months typically

Are Clear Aligners Right for You?

Clear aligners work very well for most common alignment problems. Based on my clinical experience, they are an excellent choice for:

  • Mild to moderate crowding or spacing between teeth
  • Minor bite issues (overbite, underbite, crossbite)
  • Adults and older teenagers who are self-conscious about their appearance
  • Patients with good discipline who will commit to wearing trays 20–22 hours a day
  • Patients who want to eat and maintain oral hygiene without restrictions

However, clear aligners may not be the best option if you have:

  • Severe crowding or very large spacing
  • Significant jaw or bite discrepancies requiring surgical correction
  • Impacted teeth that need guided eruption
  • Difficulty committing to wearing the trays consistently (especially young children)

Dr. Reeja's note: The only way to know for certain whether clear aligners are right for you is a proper orthodontic assessment. I have seen patients told elsewhere that they are "not suitable" for aligners who I was able to treat successfully — and vice versa. Get a professional opinion before deciding.

What Does Treatment Look Like? Step by Step

1

Consultation & Assessment

We examine your teeth, take X-rays, and discuss your goals. I will tell you honestly whether clear aligners are suitable for your case, and give you an estimated treatment time and cost.

2

Digital Scan & Treatment Planning

We take a precise 3D digital scan of your teeth using our intraoral scanner — no uncomfortable putty impressions. A digital treatment plan is designed, showing each stage of tooth movement. You can preview your final smile result.

3

Receiving Your Aligners

Your custom trays arrive and we fit them during a short appointment. I will show you how to insert and remove them comfortably, and answer any questions. Small tooth-coloured attachments may be placed on some teeth to help with more precise movements.

4

Wearing Your Trays

You wear each set of trays for 1–2 weeks, removing them only to eat, drink (anything other than plain water), and clean your teeth. You will feel gentle pressure for a day or two after each new tray — this is normal and means the teeth are moving.

5

Progress Check-ups

We see you every 6–8 weeks to monitor progress and provide your next sets of trays. These appointments are quick compared to traditional brace adjustments.

6

Retainers — Keeping Your Results

Once treatment is complete, you will wear retainers to hold your teeth in their new positions. This is a critical step that many patients overlook. Without retainers, teeth can gradually shift back. I typically recommend wearing retainers nightly long-term.

Dr. Reeja's note: The biggest mistake patients make with clear aligners is not wearing them enough. Treatment only works if the trays are in your mouth. If you know you will struggle with the discipline, traditional braces may give you a more predictable result — and that is completely fine.

Common Questions I Am Asked

How long will my treatment take?
It depends on the complexity of your case. Mild corrections can take as little as 6 months. Moderate cases are typically 12 months. More complex cases can be 18 months or longer. I will give you a realistic estimate after your assessment — I would rather be honest upfront than overpromise.
Will it hurt?
Most patients feel mild pressure or slight discomfort for 1–2 days when they start a new tray. This is a sign the teeth are moving. It is much milder than the soreness some patients experience after traditional brace adjustments, and usually resolves quickly.
Can I eat normally?
Yes — one of the biggest advantages of clear aligners. You simply remove the trays before eating and drinking (other than plain water). You can eat whatever you like with no restrictions. Just brush before putting your trays back in.
Will anyone notice I am wearing aligners?
Clear aligners are virtually invisible. Most patients find that people do not notice unless they look closely. Some patients have small tooth-coloured attachments bonded to their teeth — these are also discreet but may be slightly more visible than the trays alone.
What is the cost of clear aligners in Ajman?
Cost varies depending on case complexity and the aligner system used. We offer a range of options to suit different needs and budgets. Some insurance plans in the UAE partially cover orthodontic treatment. Book a consultation and we will give you a clear, transparent quote with no hidden fees.
